Pricing
As every quilt is unique, I will have to examine your quilt firsthand before I can give you an accurate estimate. Quilting prices depend on the size of the quilt and the complexity of the quilting. As soon as I receive your quilt top, I will call you and discuss quilting options, threads, price and whatever else you have a question about. Occasionally, a problem will develop during the quilting process which requires more of my time. In that case, I will call you and discuss how you would like to proceed. The following price list is a guideline, not an exact estimate. Prices occasionally change as the prices of fabric, threads, and batting continue to rise.
- Backing
- You may provide your own backing (please allow 4-6 inches more than quilt top on each side). Or I can cut, sew and iron backing which may be one-piece or pieced (no seams or 1-2 seams). Prices will vary according to fabric.
- Basting
- If you are a HAND quilter, I can baste your quilt for you. There is a $25 minimum for basting. My basting rate is .0075 (¾ cent) per square inch. For example: a King size quilt measuring 100“ X 100“=10,000 square inches, multiply by .0075 which totals $75.
- Batting
- You may provide your own, please remember that it needs to be at least 4” wider on each side (at least 8 inches more than the width measurement) and at least 6 inches longer than on each end (at least 12 inches more than the height measurement). Cotton batts will shrink after quilt is washed creating a more “old-fashioned” look. Polyester batts will appear more “fluffy”. If you prefer, I can supply the batting at an additional cost.
- Binding
- You can supply your own fabric or I can provide the fabric for an additional charge (according to the amount of fabric). I will make the binding and either machine stitch both sides to your quilt or machine & hand-stitch (your preference). My rate for machine-stitching both sides is .25 (25 cents) per linear inch. For example: a King size quilt measuring 100“ X 100”= 400 linear inches, multiply by .25 which totals $100. If you prefer machine and hand-stitching, the rate is .35 (35 cents) per linear inch. For example: a King size quilt measuring 100” X 100”=400 linear inches, multiply by .35 which totals $140. A third option is for me to machine-stitch binding to front only and you hand-stitch to back. This rate is .15 (15 cents) per linear inch. For example: a king size quilt measuring 100” X 100”= 400 linear inches, multiply by .15 which totals $60
- Quilting
- The following range between $.015/ sq. in. and $.045/ sq. in. depending on the complexity of the quilting. Generally, for a king size quilt, quilting will cost between $150-$450. The quilting pattern that you choose will affect the price.
- Rate 1: Simple pantograph & all-over designs, these are more open/large scale patterns which give a lighter, softer feel to the quilt. These are often preferred for bed quilts because they don't feel so dense/heavy as more closely quilted quilts do. $.015/square inch--$.020/square inch.
- Rate 2: Medium complexity, including more detailed patterns, borders, blocks, custom quilting. $.020/square inch--$.030/square inch.
- Rate 3: Very complex patterns, heavy quilting, heirloom work. $.030/square inch--$.045/square inch.
- Sleeves
- If your quilt will be hung (at home or in a show) it will need a sleeve on the top of the back for hanging. I can make this for you by machine sewing the top edge along with the binding and hand-sew the bottom of the sleeve to backing only. You can supply the fabric or I can for an additional cost. The rate for sleeve making is $.25/linear inch (top width of quilt).
- Threads
- I use high quality cotton/poly blend threads. They are $3.75 each. Generally, it takes 3 spools to do a king, 2 spools for a queen, 1 spool for a double, and 1 spool for a twin. Variegated or specialty threads will cost extra.
- Multiply the length X width (in inches)=square inches
- To calculate the cost of quilting:
- Multiply the square inches X quilt rate=quilt cost ($.015-$.045 or 1 ½ – 4 ½ cents per square inch, whichever quilting service you desire)
When I receive your quilt top I will call you to let you know that it has arrived safely at my studio and we will go over the pricing. I will not start any work until we confirm what you would like me to do. At that point I can give you a better idea of cost and when your quilt will be ready.
